Illinois State University's Art on Campus

About the Art

Illinois State University’s campus consists of far more than the obvious series of classroom buildings and athletic venues. It is also home to the Fell Arboretum, which consists of trees and gardens that have steadily increased in number since the University was established in 1857. A member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta since 1995, the Fell Arboretum now offers an outstanding assortment of plants and trees that beautify the campus. It is also an impressive outdoor, living laboratory appreciated and used not only by the campus community but public school children and Central Illinois residents.

Aesthetically complementing the Fell Arboretum and adding to the University’s rich history are elements of campus architecture, as well as many artifacts. Unique artwork scattered across the grounds and within buildings adds further enchantment, intrigue, and beauty to Illinois State. Bone Student Center, for example, has long provided display space throughout the facility to showcase artists who are former Illinois State students. Many works are displayed on the center’s walls and grounds, with portable pieces changed periodically.

In addition, the Center for the Visual Arts Galleries presents a regular schedule of exhibitions focusing on contemporary art. Shows of major artists on significant themes are offered, a number of which have originated at Illinois State and traveled to galleries elsewhere. There are in addition outdoor sculptures so enormous that installation required heavy equipment. Other pieces on display across campus range from intricate paintings to delicate glasswork added to classroom and administrative buildings with less effort or fanfare. Some of the works have been in place for decades and now are so familiar they are often overlooked. All have stories that have yet to be widely told.

What follows is an overview of some of the artwork that captures the curiosity of those who come to the University. The pieces featured are presented as a walking tour organized according to the map. The tour begins at the Bone Student Center, where public parking is available. Additional parking garages off Beaufort Street and University Street provide closer access to artwork located in the southern portion of the campus. These garages are recommended for individuals who wish to limit their walking. Some of the artwork included on the tour is displayed inside buildings that are open to the public from 8am to 4:30 p.m. during the week, with the exception of holidays.

Take a few moments to find the many creative pieces of art that not only make any visit to the University memorable but also explain why graduates fondly remember Illinois State as an extraordinary place.

Enjoy the tour!
